Your Guide to a Healthy, Happy Thanksgiving

The holidays bring joy, family time, and lots of delicious food. If you're managing any health conditions, you might worry about staying on track. Good news: You can enjoy Thanksgiving while taking care of your health!

Here are some simple strategies for success during the holidays:

  • Plan ahead for social events: Have a plan for how you’ll eat on the day of a party — it can help you make better food choices.[1] Eat a small, healthy breakfast so you don't arrive at dinner too hungry.

  • Watch your salt intake: Salt can raise blood pressure, and it can be found in many holiday dishes.[2] Try herbs and spices instead. Rosemary, garlic, and thyme add wonderful flavor without the sodium.

  • Pay attention to portions: Use a smaller plate and fill half with vegetables. This simple trick helps you enjoy everything without overdoing it. Remember: You can always go back for small seconds of your favorites.

  • Keep taking your medicine: Don't skip your daily medications during the holiday rush. Set a phone reminder or take them with your morning coffee to stay consistent.

Here are some delicious heart-healthy dishes for your Thanksgiving (or any!) celebration:

Herb-Roasted Turkey Breast

  • 3lb turkey breast

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Fresh rosemary, thyme, and sage

  • Black pepper (skip the salt)

Run herbs and oil on turkey. Roast at 350°F until done (about 90 minutes).

Colorful Roasted Vegetables

  • Carrots, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Garlic powder and pepper

Toss vegetables with oil and seasonings . Roast at 400°F for 25 minutes.

Mashed Cauliflower

  • 1 large cauliflower head

  • 2 tablespoons low-fat milk

  • Garlic and chives

Steam cauliflower until soft. Mash with milk and seasonings for a creamy, lower-carb side.

Cranberry-Orange Relish

  • Fresh cranberries

  • Orange zest and juice

  • Touch of honey

Mix ingredients and refrigerate. This fresh version has less sugar than canned sauce!

You deserve a happy and healthy holiday season

The holidays are about connection and gratitude. By making small, smart choices, you can protect your health while enjoying every moment. Listen to your body, stay mindful, and remember that balance is key. [3]
