Join the Nation of Lifesavers During American Heart Month
Each February, American Heart Month reminds us that heart disease and cardiac emergencies can happen to anyone, anywhere. This year, the American Heart Association is issuing a powerful call to action: Join the Nation of Lifesavers and help double the survival rate of cardiac arrest by 2030.
More than 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside the hospital each year in the United States, and far too many of those moments end in tragedy simply because help doesn’t arrive in time. What many people don’t realize is that the first responder in a cardiac emergency isn’t always a paramedic or a firefighter—it’s the person standing nearby. Whether you’re at home, in a store, at the gym or cheering on your child at a soccer game, your willingness to act can be the difference between life and death.
Currently, bystanders step in only about 40% of the time. That gap isn’t caused by lack of compassion—it’s caused by lack of confidence and knowledge. The good news? Anyone can learn CPR, and it takes far less time than most people think.
Why CPR Matters
CPR is one of the most important tools we have to save lives during cardiac arrest.
For adults and teens, Hands‑Only CPR can double or even triple the chance of survival.
Children and infants need CPR that includes breaths, making training even more essential.
Early action—calling 911, starting CPR and using an AED when available—creates a chain of survival that dramatically improves outcomes.
Cardiac arrest doesn’t discriminate. It can strike in an instant. Being prepared strengthens not just individuals, but entire communities.
You don’t need a medical background, a uniform, or a special title. All you need is knowledge, courage, and readiness to act. This Heart Month is the perfect time to learn CPR or refresh your skills.
How to Join the Nation of Lifesavers
There are more ways than ever to get trained and feel confident stepping in during an emergency:
Take a Heartsaver CPR certification course in your area.
Learn at your own pace with an online CPR course.
Practice at home using a CPR Anytime® Training Kit.
Watch a 60‑second Hands‑Only CPR video to learn the two simple steps: 1. Call 911. 2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest.
Every resource is designed to meet you where you are and empower you to act quickly and effectively when seconds matter.
