Join the Nation of Lifesavers and Learn CPR Today

From the American Heart Association

Each year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital in the United States, including 23,000 children. Cardiac arrest occurs when there is an electrical malfunction in the heart’s rhythm that results in a loss of blood flow to the heart, lungs, brain, and other organs.

When you pair that with the fact that almost 3 out of 4 of those happen at home and 90% don’t survive, it’s clear that more people need to learn CPR – or cardio pulmonary resuscitation – and be ready to act in an emergency.

The American Heart Association recognizes this need and has a plan to help.

This February during American Heart Month, we are encouraging everyone to join the Nation of Lifesavers™ by learning CPR.

Nation of Lifesavers is a movement led by the Association with a goal to double survival rates of cardiac arrest by 2030. How can we reach that goal? By urging more people to learn this lifesaving skill and acting when an emergency unfolds in front of them.

Being prepared for a cardiac emergency includes being prepared to call 911 for advanced medical support, learning CPR to provide immediate help while emergency services are in transit and using an AED – automated external defibrillator – as soon as one is available.

CPR is something nearly everyone can learn and do. We encourage at least one person in every family to learn CPR because statistics show that most cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital and often in the home.

You can learn the simple steps to CPR and help improve the chance of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest. Simply visit heart.org/nation to learn more about CPR and responding to a cardiac emergency.
